Aerial view of Howard Knob Overlook, a curved elevated walkway looping over an overlook with the Blue Ridge Mountains behind.

Project Overview

Areté Engineers provided structural engineering for an elevated, horseshoe-shaped public overlook at Howard Knob Park in Boone, North Carolina. Located at an elevation of 4,396 feet, this ADA-accessible overlook sits roughly 1,000 feet above downtown Boone and the Appalachian State University campus. As a key feature of the park upgrade, the platform provides a “suspended in air” sensation, offering panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains without requiring a strenuous hike.

Engineering & Structural Design

The unique semicircular form of the viewing platform required intricate design and analysis for its curved framing members. To secure the structure to the steep terrain, Areté coordinated with geotechnical engineers to anchor strip footings to deep rock pins driven into bedrock. This pinned-footing approach minimized excavation and limited disturbance to the surrounding terrain. Framed with domestic structural steel, the deck is detailed to accommodate thermal expansion and structural movement, while safely resisting dead loads, pedestrian live loads, and high winds. Areté also provided construction administration, including on-site observations of the steel and reinforcement installation.

The Surrounding Environment

The Howard Knob Overlook offers a view into the high-elevation mountain environment. The surrounding cliff faces and rocks serve as a habitat for nesting hawks, falcons, woodpeckers, and migrating songbirds. Beneath the trees, black bears, foxes, and white-tailed deer roam the woods. The platform showcases vibrant pink and white rhododendron blooms in late spring and brilliant autumn foliage when the oaks and maples turn to gold and crimson in the fall.

Through this low-impact approach, the overlook creates a lasting, accessible connection between the local community and the beauty of the High Country.
